Alabama’s Storm Prep Tax Holiday: What to Know
Living in Alabama, we know how quickly severe weather can strike, and how important it is to be prepared. From ice storm power outages to tornado wind damage, we experience it all. That's why the state of Alabama has implemented an annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, giving you the chance to stock up on essentials ahead of spring weather — without paying Alabama state sales tax (and in some areas, local sales tax) on qualifying items.
This year, the Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday will begin Friday, February 20th and will end at 11:59 PM on Sunday, February 22nd.
Qualifying Items:
- Batteries: AAA, AA, C, D, 6-volt, 9-volt
- Cell phone batteries & chargers
- Weather Radios
- Flashlights
- Lanterns
- Tarps, Drop Cloths, Plastic Sheeting
- Ground Anchoring: Bungee Cords, Rope
- Duct Tape
- Protective Window Coverings: Plywood, Film
- Can Openers (non-electric)
- Coolers
- Ice Packs
- First Aid Kits
- Fire Extinguishers
- Smoke Detectors
- Carbon Monoxide Detectors
- Fuel Containers
- Portable Generators
In order to be eligible for the Sever Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday, individual items must not exceed $94, with the exception of portable generators, which are not to exceed $1,564.
